KTC Intro

Formed through the collaborative efforts of disabled athlete Domonic Corradin and long-time China resident and world traveler Joshua Dominick, Krankin’ thru China is a movement to bring the sport of handcycling to China and with it a more active, healthier lifestyle for people with disabilities that live in that country. There are many difficulties that people with disabilities face in China, including both physical and mental, and even social, but after our first two initial trips in October 2013 and March 2014, meeting with individuals and a range of organizations, we believe there is great potential and desire for a more active lifestyle. Krankin’ thru China will work to hold both large and small interactive events throughout the year in China, getting people out and aware of possibilities that exist to improve their lives. We will continue to meet with people to help them push their own limits and explore their individual potential. Within the next three years, we also hope to have a physical presence in China where people can meet, interact and get fit with both the equipment and know-how to make that happen. Overall Benefits/Advantages to Handcycling: I had used a handcycle as a cardiovascular training element while I was playing other sports, such as basketball and tennis, to help build my endurance. Over 15 years later, I decided to make handcycling my competitive sport of choice. Handcycling has grown leaps and bounds over time, and for good reason. It has the ability to fit any fitness/ability level or environment. You can ride for leisure with your friends and family down the local paths. You can use it as a cross-trainer for endurance. You can even be competitive around the world at all calibers from beginner to elite athlete. The technology has advanced greatly over the years and you are able to find a specific bike that fits your needs – taking it on the pavement or off onto the dirt trails. And, most of the component parts – wheels, brakes, gears, shifters, etc. – are available from local bicycle shops and online retailers. This makes it easier and less expensive to repair or even upgrade your bike if you choose.

What is the Dream Ride?

In 2014, we created a promotional event for the Krankin' Thru China program called the Dream Ride. Born as a "continuation ride", this journey would take the core team from Shangri La, high up in the Himilayas, all the way to Beijing.

Each year, the team would tackle approximately a 500 mile (800 km) section. Then continue from the previous year's finish point on to the next stop, for a total of over 2,300 miles (3,700 km).

Krankin Thru China Trip Update (3-7-2014)

So, I have to sincerely apologize for it taking me so ridiculously long to get you all the low down on my trip to China this last October. The love and out-pouring from the trip has been incredible and I look forward to returning in April 2014 to keep building the relationship with the locals and the Disabled Persons' Federation.

The international handcycling outreach we are developing with the support of the the Triumph Foundation (www.Triumph-Foundation.org) here in Canyon Country, CA is starting to gain some wonderful momentum and we are anxious to keep it growing. Keep on the look out for great things to come!

In the meantime, here are a couple video clips from the last trip. So much more to come!

Krankin Thru China Trip Update (10-3-2013)

Ok, so my PLAN was to update each day for the final week before I hopped on the plane on my way to the land of the Orient. BUUUUTTTT, the powers that be had another plan and decided to call me sick for a few days with a fever and monster headache. I resisted a doctors visit and even Urgent Care, but upped my water intake a bunch and downed Emergen-C's and dried cranberries like it was my job. So I have missed a few days of updating you all on the progress I have made leading up to this epic voyage I am about to depart on.

So far, I have stripped my bike almost completely apart, prepped and painted the frame and am almost ready for full re-assembly. I have got my main packing done in the new Ledge Sports Adventure 65L pack and it is lighter than I was expecting. A big plus for as much as I will be humping it all over on my own back. I still need to pack one more duffel yet of the last few odds and ends and that is done.

I have been playing around a little with the new GoPro Hero3 Black Edition cameras that I will be bringing on the trip. They are brand new to me and have a bit of a learning curve. So far the image quality is top notch! I can't wait to strap em to me and go hit the hills.

Over the last few days I have been fighting a bit of mixed emotions surrounding this trip. I am so excited and honored to get to go to another country and share my life with other people and get them inspired to go and do, yet sad to leave my family behind for almost an entire month. This will be the longest I have ever been away from them. I know they understand and will miss me, we will chat on Skype and such, but still tough.

On another note, all of the logistics for the trip are coming together very well. The sponsors have been generous and I am very happy to be representing a great group on this adventure. Flights are booked, Visa is in hand, bags are mostly packed, things are getting taken care of around the house to survive while I am away. Now I just need to see if I can sort a ride to the airport with all my gear. And if anyone wishes to sneak in that last minute donation, it is easy as. Just click the PayPal donate button below. Every bit helps and is GREATLY appreciated.

I hope everyone is ready for an awesome adventure, cuz I am takin' you with me, man! Who's comin' with me? ..yeah!

Krankin Thru China Trip Update (9-26-2013)

So, I am down to less than 2 weeks before I embark on a trip of a lifetime – 11 days to be exact – and I am very excited, nervous, happy, scared and so many thoughts and emotions all wrapped into one. My head is already spinning and there are still many days until I fly out. I am so taken aback by all of the support from people and organizations. I have even had the pleasure of chatting with (over Skype) some of the people I will be spending a good amount of my time with in China. Looks like I will definitely be returning with great new friendships.

Over the last few days I have been fiddling with the new cameras and trying to be more proficient at using them. The last thing I want to have happen is a wrong button pushed right before I try to navigate some killer pass and not get the footage. The GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition is pretty easy to use, with only 3 buttons. I think I will get it down pat soon. Wish me luck!

I have also be trying to pack some of my things in my pack, filtering through things I THINK I need and the things I really need. Only so much room and I will be there for a good while, so I have to grab only the necessities. I have also been working on getting my bike shipped over, rather than trying to bring it on the plane with me. It sounds pretty positive that I will be able to ship it over, but we will see. It is getting close to travel time.

Only a few more odds and ends to wrap up and I will be off on this grand adventure!
